The Vernon Garden Club’s activities are many and varied. Among some of our projects: Our highly successful Annual Plant Sale each May, maintaining and seasonally enhancing the VGC’s Public Gardens and Herb Garden and the ever popular hosting of our Local Garden Tours. Members continue to exhibit in Hartford’s Wadsworth Atheneum “Fine Arts and Flowers Show” each May, and Rockville Public Library’s “Tree Festival” in December. These past several years, the Club has also participated in the Strong Family Farm Harvest Festival Scarecrow Contest demonstrating some of our member’s creative and fun natures. In addition, the Club has presented numerous workshops to support the on-going learning of our members with a host of engaging, locally well-known and engaging presenters sharing their knowledge.
We are proud to have donated funds or expertise to restore the rose arches at Elizabeth Park, replaced a sugar maple at Elmwood Cemetery, provide yearly scholarships to local students, and plant “Easy Elegance” rose bushes at Vernon’s Arts Center East in memory of Ann Votta.
The VGC awards an annual $500 scholarship to a graduating senior at a local high school who will be pursuing a career in horticulture or a related field. To this end we created a Ways and Means Committee to raise money for the scholarship fund. To date the Club has awarded $$$ towards the future aspirations of many talented recipients.
With an eye on conservation and preserving our environment, the Club has delivered “bulk” quantities to Vernon’s Hazardous Waste Collection.
