The Vernon Garden Club’s activities are many and varied. Among our projects: a highly successful Annual Plant Sale each May, maintaining and seasonally enhancing the VGC’s public gardens and herb gardens, presentation of our spectacular summer Garden Tours, “Garden Reflections,” in 2005, 2007, 2009, 2011 and 2013, as well as numerous workshops and fieldtrips. Members continue to exhibit in Hartford’s Wadsworth Atheneum’s “Fine Arts and Flowers Show” each May and “Festival of Trees” in December.
The VGC awards an annual $750 scholarship to a graduating senior at a local high school who will be pursuing a career in horticulture or a related field. To this end we created a Ways and Means committee to raise money solely for the scholarship fund.
In 2005, members of the “Civic Improvement Committee” created a Jr Gardeners’ Program for third grade students at Lake Street School which has been very successful. A highlight of that program is the “Butterfly Garden” there, planned, planted and maintained by the students in the program.
The club also provides ongoing maintenance for our public gardens, Garden on the Green and Gateway to Rockville Garden, restoring and renewing them on a regularly scheduled basis.
June 21, 2010, members celebrated our 10th Anniversary at the annual club picnic and installation of officers. Jean Hopkins put together a wonderful booklet entitled “A Dedicated Decade” extolling the many contributions that the club and its members have made to our community. The future brings more promise for VGC service!
We are proud to have donated funds or expertise to restore the rose arches at Elizabeth Park, replace a sugar maple at Elmwood Cemetery, provide yearly scholarships to local students, and plant “Easy Elegance” rose bushes at the Vernon Community Arts Center in memory of Ann Votta.
We’ve updated our by-laws, purchased a sound system, and delivered “bulk” quantities to Vernon’s Hazardous Waste Collection. And, we have produced this website at: http://www.vernongardenclub.org
